Statement of Mathematical Intent
At St. Theresa's RC Primary School, we aim to foster a purposeful and practical approach to Mathematics. We believe in the importance of essential skills, methodology and logical thinking. A deep understanding of these areas allows children to embed their Maths learning and apply their skills in a wider context, not just in terms of the curriculum but also in later life. Children at St. Theresa's are taught:
- to become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics
- reason mathematically
- solve problems by applying their Mathematics skills.
We are committed to ensuring that children are able to recognise the importance of Mathematics in the wider world and that they are also able to use their mathematical skills confidently in their lives in a range of different contexts. We want all children to enjoy Mathematics and to experience success in the subject, with the ability to reason mathematically. We are committed to developing children's curiosity about the subject, as well as an appreciation of the power and beauty of Mathematics. Mathematics is a journey and a long-term goal, achieved through exploration, clarification, practice and application over time.
At each stage of learning, children should be able to develop a deep, conceptual understanding of the topic and be able to build on this over time.
We know that there are three levels of learning.
- Shallow learning: surface, temporary, often lost.
- Deep learning: it sticks, can be recalled and used.
- Deepest learning: can be transferred and applied in different contexts.
At. St Theresa's RC Primary School, deep and deepest levels of learning are what we are aiming for by adopting the Mastery Approach. Mathematics is a core subject that is an essential component of a balanced curriculum that is both well matched and challenging to the learner's needs.
