St Theresa's RC Primary School

Reception is the final academic year of the Early Years Foundation Stage. The class teacher is Mr. Hawkins and the Teaching Assistants are Mrs. Hughes and Mrs. Dawes.

Below, you will find important information regarding our learning and what you can do to support your child's learning at home.

Reception Key Information

School starts at 8.50am. Our learning begins straight away, so to ensure no learning time is lost, children should arrive on time every day. We start our day with a handwriting/letter formation activity. We have daily sessions in Literacy, Phonics and Maths. Throughout the week, we have lessons in Religious Education, Understanding the World (Science, History or Geography based), Music and Personal, Social and Emotional Education. Other daily activities include Guided Reading and Storytime.

Our Curriculum

In Reception, we follow a thematic curriculum that encapsulates the entirety of the EYFS Framework 2021. We teach a curriculum that develops the whole child and encourages children to flourish as resilient and passionate learners. To learn more about our ethos and the learning culture we promote in Early Years, please see the EYFS policy which is listed on the school policies page of this website.

Home Reading

Children in Reception will bring home a reading book every day. Please ensure that you read with your child every day. Accepted educational research into early reading strongly suggests that children enjoy a significantly higher rate of progression and achievement when they read daily. You can record any comments on your child's reading in their yellow reading record. Reading books will be changed every Thursday and the books children bring home will directly correlate with the sounds/words they have been learning during that week's phonics sessions.

Physical Education

Reception have P.E every Friday afternoon. Please ensure that your child has a P.E kit, which consists of a white t-shirt and black shorts (or black leggings/jogging bottoms for girls) and black pumps/trainers. All items of P.E kit should be clearly labelled with your child's name. P.E kit can stay in school and will be sent home to be washed at the end of every half-term.

Tapestry

In EYFS, we use an incredible online learning journey called Tapestry. We use Tapestry to record and track your child’s learning through a variety of written observations, photographs and video.  Please download the app so you can contribute and be directly involved with your child’s learning! If you need help to login, please see a member of the EYFS team.

Parental and Family Engagement

In Reception, we always welcome support and interaction with our wonderful families and community. We hold regular stay and play sessions where you are welcome to spend time in class with your child and to see the amazing learning that takes place. We also post regular updates about our learning on our school Twitter and Facebook page. Throughout the year, we hold regular workshops in supporting your child in Phonics, Maths and Tapestry. Please keep up to date with these events by reading the weekly St Theresa's newsletter.
