Year 2 Key Information

Welcome to Year 2.nThis will be an exciting, enjoyable and engaging year, where your child will learn new skills and consolidate existing skills.

The class teacher in Y2 is Miss Harris and the teaching assistant is Miss Chapman.

School gates open at 8:45 ready for the lessons to start at 8.50am

As soon as the children come into our class our work begins so please make sure they arrive on time then they do not miss out on valuable handwriting and spelling time.

Year 2 have PE on Thursday afternoon. Please make sure your child has a PE kit in school which consists of a white top, black shorts and black pumps.

Please ensure your child's clothes and belongings have either their name or initials in them. This is to stop them from getting lost in class when they get changed.

I am sure it will be a fabulous year for everybody, and we are looking forward to seeing everyone progress along their own learning journey in Y2.

SECRET AGENT TRAINING

During the month of May Year 2 will be undertaking Secret Agent Training (SATs). There will be a range of assessments linked to arithmetic, reasoning, reading papers and SPaG.

Please help your child by ensuring they complete their weekly homework which is sent home on a Friday. When gets closer to May we will have a meeting to discuss SAT's in more detail and what your child should expect.

Below is a link to some videos from last year's Y2 teacher that you can access to prepare children closer to the time.

Homework

We give home work and spellings out on a Friday to be returned on the following Wednesday. Your child will also get Maths homework linked to the learning in that week.

Reading books

Reading books will be given out on a Friday. Your child should then keep this book at home to read until they are due to bring it back. Books MUST be returned on a Wednesday so that we can change everyone's book before a new one is sent home on Friday.

It is an expectation that children are listened to when reading at home. 5 minutes a day can make such a massive difference to their reading fluency and their confidence. Your child should be reading a minimum of 3 x a week with an adult at home if possible.

Please support your child’s reading by listening to them read and commenting in their yellow reading record. (you can comment or simply sign so we know they are reading at home)  KS1 children's reading books and spellings match  the phonemes taught that week.

The children are not expected to read a whole book every time - a couple of pages regularly is fine. Once this is returned to school, the book will then be change. Book bands are regularly reviewed.

If a book is lost then there will be a £5 charge.

Here you will find a guide that will give you some ideas to help your child with their reading . This guide is designed to give all parents a clear understanding of how our reading scheme (Bug Club) progresses throughout our school.

We also have a range of online books children can read online

Spellings

Spellings are given out on a Friday and tested on the following Friday- the spellings children receive match the phonemes or spelling patterns they are being taught in their lessons in school, please practise these at home.

A set of the spellings are sent home on a Friday to so they can be practised at home. Each week we look at a different spelling rule/grapheme and the spellings that are given out link to that rule/grapheme.
