Year 2 Key Information
Welcome to Year 2.nThis will be an exciting, enjoyable and engaging year, where your child will learn new skills and further develop their existing skills learned in Year 1.
The class teacher in Y2 is Mrs Crowther and the teaching assistant is Miss McQuilliam.
School gates open at 8:45 ready for the lessons to start at 8.50am
As soon as the children come into our class our work begins so please make sure they arrive on time then they do not miss out on valuable learning time.
Year 2 have PE on Mondays and Thursdays. Please make sure your child has a PE kit in school which consists of a plain white top, black shorts and black pumps.
Please ensure your child's clothes and belongings have either their name or initials in them. This is to stop them from getting lost in class when they get changed, and are moving around the school.
I am sure it will be a fabulous year for everybody, and we are looking forward to seeing everyone progress along their own learning journey in Y2.
Curriculum overview for Year 2
The curriculum overviews for Autumn and Spring: Core and Non Core Subjects
Homework
We give home work out every Friday to be returned on Wednesday the following week. Each child will be given English and Maths homework book to complete 1 page of each week.
Weekly spellings will also be sent home on Fridays and will be tested the next week. These will be glued into their English homeowork books for them to complete at home. The words on the spelling lists will have been taught in the daily spelling lessons that week, so children should be familiar with them already.
Your child will also receive a reading book weekly.
Home Reading
Children in Year 2 will bring home a reading book every day. Please ensure that you read with your child every day. Education Endowment Foundation Research into early reading strongly suggests that children enjoy a significantly higher rate of progression and achievement when they read daily. You can record any comments on your child's reading in their yellow reading record. Reading books will be changed every Wednesday. However, if your child has read the book before Wednesday, they can swap it for another book containing the same phonemes and graphemes. In addition to a book, children will be allocated an online eBook on the Pearsons Bug Club website. Please see your child's teacher for login details.
If a book is lost then there will be a £5 charge to replace it.
Here you will find a guide that will give you some ideas to help your child with their reading . This guide is designed to give all parents a clear understanding of how our reading scheme (Bug Club) progresses throughout our school.

We also have a range of online books children can read online
Spellings
Spellings are given out on a Friday with your child's homework and tested the following Friday. The words on the spelling lists will have been taught in daily spelling lessons that week, so children should be familiar with them already.
Each day we look at a different spelling rule and develop your child's ability to both read and spell words with a wide range of patterns and rules.

Maths
Times tables
In Year 2 the children need to be secure with x2 x5 x10 and begin to learn the 3 times tables once secure. We practise these as a class at the beginning of our daily Maths lesson. We also provide lots of opportunities for children to explore patterns in numbers such as number bonds, doubles and halves during these lessons too.
Please help your child to learn the relevant times tables of by heart and practice them regularly. As a school, we use TT Rock Stars for children to further embed their times table knowledge and enjoy learning them at home. Year 2 children will receive a login to this in the Summer Term, once they have comopleted the multiplication and division unit of work in class.
As a school we use the White Rose Maths scheme for our daily Maths lessons. Below is a link to the Home Learning part of the website. You can use this to consolidate or revise concepts with your child at home.

English
We currently follow Ready Steady Write for our English lessons. We will explore a new book each half term and explore various aspects of them together. Children will be writing in a range of genres and encouraged to develop their grammar skills alongside this.
To support your child at home you could practise their weekly spellings, and complete the homework each week. These will be based on the learning in class that week and is brilliant for consolidating and embedding your child's understanding.
Sentence structure, letter formation and basic punctuation are essential in Key Stage One. Simply encouraging your child to write as often as they can at home will allow them to make progress in all of these areas.
We complete daily Letterjoin lessons in class to develop children's letter formation leading into Year 2 children beginning to join letters towards the end of the year for Greater Depth. Your child will receive a login for this within the Autumn Term, so that they can access it via a tablet, phone or laptop at home.

Well-being
To ensure your child's physical and mental wellbeing is well maintained is vital to their learning. In Key Stage 1 we run the "Rainbows" programme each term. This is a programme designed for children who may benefit from intervention relating to anxiety, breavement or other life events that may affect their wellbeing. Letters about this intervetion are sent termly, and you can sign your child up to them if you feel they may benefit from extra wellebeing support.
